S. BLUNT FOR ACKERMAN, LONDON. Meeting of the Society for the Extinction of the Slave Trade, & for the Civilization of Africa. Hand-colored engraving, 8-5/8 x 11 inches, with wide margins 11-3/8 x 15-1/2 inches; paper lightly and evenly toned; strong plate impression. London: Ackerman, 1840
The Society had a large following on both sides of the Atlantic, with William Lloyd Garrison and Wendell Phillips leading the American contingent. Later in the month, the World Anti-Slavery Convention, was held at Exeter Hall, where the exclusion of women from the proceedings served as a strong stimulus to the nascent women's suffrage movement. We could only locate one copy at the Schomburg.
