S. M. DIL (LOUIS MALAVIEILLE, 1907-?) FIAT / 6CV. 1932.
45 1/2x29 7/8 inches. Martin-Mamy, Crouan & Roques, Paris.
Condition B+: repaired tears in margins; foxing.
A man of many talents, Dil worked as a journalist, photographer, and architect. He also worked at various graphic studios and became the director of the prestigious George Lang Printing Company. This poster, one of two that he did for Fiat, shows the influence of the modernist movement in his work. Utilizing photography and creating a layout that owes much to the influence of Cassandre, the image has a car along the very top, leaving the rest dramatically blank in order to give the illusion of space and speed. The letters are in the upper left and below right, using the diagonal. The typography is neat, in a clean sans serif style. A very good French advertising poster of the period. Auto Show II, 73.
