SÁNDOR BORTNYIK (1893-1976)

MODIANO. 1929.

49¾x37 inches, 126¼x94 cm. Athenaeum, Budapest.
Condition A-: minor repaired tears, creases and abrasions in margins and along vertical and horizontal folds. Framed.

A painter and graphic designer, Bortnyik began studying art in Budapest and became one of the earliest followers of Lajos Kassak. He moved to Weimar in the early 1920s where he was influenced by the Bauhaus and specifically the work of Oskar Schlemmer and Theo van Doesburg. Bortnyik returned to Hungary where he worked as a graphic designer and teacher at a school of advertising that he founded and directed. Although his style varied over his career, he is most highly regarded for his avant-garde design work within the poster world. He designed a number of images for Modiano, the famed rolling paper company.
