With a Wooden Spoon is an excellent and early example of the striking series of three dimensional works in which Sam Gilliam poured and layered acrylic on birch plywood constructions. Gilliam first began showing these architectural works that blur the liine between painting and sculpture at Baumgartner Galleries in 1994,. He then showed more with Klein Art Works in Chicago in 1997, and in his Solo Exhibition: Gilliam in 3-D at the Kreeger Museum, Washington, DC the following year. Other examples can be found in the collections of Smith College Museum of Art, Northhampton, MA, and the Department of Veteran Affairs, Philadelphia. Binstock p. 138.
