Provenance: acquired directly from the artist; Lynn Ritchie, Amsterdam; thence by descent to the current owner, private collection, New York. Lynn Ritchie was one of Middleton's closest friends in Amsterdam and head of the American Women's Club. She did public relations work for KLM, commissioning artwork from Middleton for various ad campaigns.

The Gilded Hawk is also the title of a 1957 Coleman Hawkins jazz album.
