Boys and Boats, the earliest and largest oil painting by Samella Lewis to come to auction, demonstrates her interest in Asian culture. The year before, Dr. Lewis had been awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to study at First Institute of Chinese Civilization and Tung Mai University in Taiwan. By 1964, she was a National Defense Education Act post-doctoral fellow at University of Southern California, studying Chinese language and Asian civilization.
