Oil on canvas, mounted to masonite, 1963. 915x1115 mm; 36x43 1/2 inches. Signed and dated in oil, lower right recto. Signed, titled, dated and inscribed in oil on the verso. Two areas of craquelure to the left and right of the central figure.

Boys and Boats, the earliest and largest oil painting by Samella Lewis to come to auction, demonstrates her interest in Asian culture. The year before, Dr. Lewis had been awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to study at First Institute of Chinese Civilization and Tung Mai University in Taiwan. By 1964, she was a National Defense Education Act post-doctoral fellow at University of Southern California, studying Chinese language and Asian civilization.
