SAMUEL J. BROWN (1907 - 1994)

Lithograph on wove paper, circa 1930's. 305x241 mm; 12x9 1/2inches, wide margins. Signed, titled and numbered 1 in pencil, lower margin. A very good impression of this very scarce, modernist print.

Born in Wilmington, NC, Samuel Joseph Brown studied at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and taught in Philadelphia public schools for 35 years. He participated in the WPA from 1933-1948, and his work was praised by Eleanor Roosevelt. He also made color screenprints for the One World project, to show the harmony which could exist in integrated schools.
