SAMUEL JOHN MILTON BROWN (1873-1965) NACH AMERIKA UND CANADA / CUNARD LINE / [AQUITANIA.] Circa 1925.
40 1/4x25 inches, 102 1/4x63 1/2 cm. Thos. Forman & Sons, Nottingham.
Condition: A-: minor repaired tears at edges; minor restoration and scratching in text; repaired pin holes in margins.
The Cunard Line had three four-funnel ships: the Lusitania and her sister Mauretania launched within nine weeks of each other in 1907, followed by the Aquitania seven years later. The Berengaria was originally built for the Hamburg America Line (for whom she sailed from 1912 until the war as the Imperator). She sailed the Atlantic Routes with the Aquitania and the Mauretania from 1922-1928. Pictured is the Aquitania, who can be recognized by her large front cowls. Brown was primarily a maritime painter, but he also designed posters for the Cunard Line as well as other shipping companies.
