Rothbort (1882-1971) was born in Volkovist, Russia, and survived early on as a cantor, traveling to various towns and villages, gaining many impressions of rural Jewish life. The political unrest in Russia led to his immigration to America in 1904. He settled in New York and turned to painting, becoming known for his impressionist views of Brooklyn, including Prospect Park, Gowanus Canal and farms in Flatbush.
