WRITTEN DURING THE PERUVIAN CAMPAIGN SAN MARTÍN, JOSÉ DE. Letter Signed, "Jose de Sn. Martin," to Colonel José Ignacio Zenteno, in Spanish, requesting that he convey to the Supreme Commander his recommendation that the officers of the army temporarily occupy the vacancies created by the insufficiency of regimental recruits and the lack of a complete army, and observing that this arrangement would have the additional benefit of providing the troops with instruction. With an Endorsement Signed by Supreme Director of Chile Bernardo O'Higgins, "O'Higgins," ratifying the resolution in the letter, dated November 18, 1820, written in the left margin. Additionally signed by Zenteno, below signature of O'Higgins. 1 page, folio; small hole at upper right (not affecting text), faint scattered foxing, folds. Pisco, 6 October 1820

Ignoring the order from Buenos Aires to return with his army, San Martín sailed with his men for Peru, arriving in the bay of Pisco in September of 1820. San Martín's incomplete army, lacking the possibility of reinforcements from Argentina, was inadequate as an invasion force; instead, he orchestrated uprisings throughout Peru, culminating in his declaration of independence in Lima on July 28, 1821.
