SARGENT CLAUDE JOHNSON (1888 - 1967)
Untitled (Standing Mexican Figure).

Terra cotta, with glazed details, circa 1960. 635x480 mm; 25x18x9 inches.

Provenance: private California collection; thence by descent to a private Vancouver collection.

This expressive figure is an unsually large, late work by the California sculptor, which shows a heavy Mexican influence in the subject and medium. In 1945, Johnson was awarded an Abraham Rosenberg scholarship to travel to Mexico, where he studied ceramics and pre-Columbian art in Oaxaca and Southern Mexico. He travelled to Mexico again in 1949 on a second Rosenberg scholarship and made other trips there during the '50s and '60s.
