SARGENT CLAUDE JOHNSON (1888 - 1967)
Untitled (Standing Nude).

Oaxacan clay, circa 1965. Approximately 178x76x51 mm; 7x3x2 inches (not including the wooden base). Incised signature, lower right.

Provenance: private California collection.

This modernist female figure is a late work by the California sculptor, which shows a heavy Mexican influence in both the subject and medium. In 1945, Johnson was awarded a Rosenberg scholarship to travel to Mexico, where he studied ceramics and pre-Columbian art in Oaxaca and Southern Mexico. He traveled to Mexico again in 1949 on a second Rosenberg scholarship and made other trips there during the '50s and '60s. The modelling and scalloped, abstract head are similar to another Oaxacan clay figure, The Politician, 1965, exhibited at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
