"The famous 'Flexible Flyer' wooden sleds were patented in 1889 by S.L. Allen Co. in Philadelphia (Art of Skiing, p. 111). For these skis based on Norwegian techniques, the name "Splitkein" means "split cane," referring to the laminations of the ski. S.L. Allen kept manufacturing Flexible Flyers until the late 1960s when the factory closed and the company was sold. Art of Skiing p. 111, Alpi 63.
