The Jeffersonian went into service in 1941, the last addition to the Pennsy's "Fleet of Modernism" before the end of World War II. Running the route from New York to St. Louis, her name derives from Thomas Jefferson, who made the Louisiana Purchase, which included the territory that would become Missouri. Jefferson was a major proponent of westward expansion and it was under his presidency, in 1804, that Louis and Clark set out from St. Louis on their expedition to reach the Pacific Ocean. rare.
