SAUL BASS. (? - 1996) 5TH SAN FRANCISCO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL. 1961.
401/2x29 inches.
Condition A-: creases in image. Paper.
Saul Bass became famous in the 1950s thanks to his collaboration with Otto Preminger, Alfred Hitchcock and Stanley Kubrick. He specialized in movie posters and title sequences, and was able to revolutionize both fields, the former thanks to his dropping the "big head" theory, prevalent in movie poster advertising through the 1950s, and the latter by redefining film's visual language. Whether using graphics or photography, his work is always highly symbolic and minimal, living up to his credo, "symbolize and summarize." For this movie festival, he achieves a near hypnotic effect by depicting a simple roll of film.
