Additional Details

The map, Sauthier's greatest accomplishment, shows the Province of New-York from the Canadian border on the north to Burlington, south of Trenton on the Delaware River. On the west the map shows the eastern part of Lake Ontario, on the east it just reaches Boston (the large swath of Connecticut , Massachusetts and New Hampshire that is mostly devoid of detail is included on the map only to show the complete road between Boston and New York/Hudson River). Important Revolutionary period map that once belonged to Lord Percy, the British General who battled the Americans in the first skirmishes at Concord and Lexington in 1775 and then commanded the British troops in the early stages of the Revolution fighting in New York. It was Lord Percy's patronage of Sauthier that permitted him to work on maps while in America. When Lord Percy returned to England from the colonies he took Sauthier with him and made him his private secretary. This map comes from Sotheby's sale of the Percy family properties on 14-16 May 1997 at Lord Percy's suburban London residence - the Syon House in Brentford, Lot 364. Included with the map is Babinski's 1997 reference book on maps drawn by C. J. Sauthier - published in July 1997 in only 6 copies. It is custom bound in calf to match the original lid-type case in style, color and height. A fine copy of a rare map, made unique by prior ownership by Lord Percy. Rumsey 3349 (missing 2 sheets). Cumming, Brit. Maps of Col. America pages 72-74; Babinski, Sauthier, Map 1.
