Additional Details

Fascinating lithograph illustrating the Philadelphia, Wilmington & Baltimore Rail Road Company's brave but sensible solution to ferry freight across the frozen Susquehanna River at Havre de Grace in the brutal winter of 1852. From January 15th to February 24th temporary tracks were installed across the completely solid river. 1378 cars containing over 10,000 tons of mail and various goods were shifted over the ice in this brief period of daring industriousness.
