Additional Details

Arthur A. Schomburg (1874-1938) collector and historian was born in Puerto Rico, the son of Mary Joseph, a free-born laundress. Little is known of his early education. But his life-long passion was the investigation and reporting of the African experience in the Americas. In these letters to fellow librarian and historian Dorothy Porter, Schomburg asks about a rare copy of Reverend Richard Allen''s "Oration on the African Slave trade," as well as other early printings by African-American authors.
