One of the world's most famous opera houses, the Vienna State Opera House was constructed from 1861 to 1869 on Vienna's Ringstrasse (Ring Boulevard), a road that circles the city center. Home to artists such as Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss and Herbert von Karajan, the opera house was virtually destroyed during World War II. Reopened in 1955 after 10 years of renovation, it remains one of the world’s greatest musical establishments.
