first edition. In his efforts to calculate stellar distances Herschel studied the movement of double stars. His observations over a quarter century led him to the conclusion that these were pairs orbiting in tandem due to gravitational attraction. This was confirmed by other astronomers after his death, validating Sir Isaac Newton''s assumption that the law of gravity was universal. DSB VI, 330-31.
