Pierre de Maricourt's letter dating from 1269 was the first separate treatise on magnetism, "one of the greatest monuments of experimental research in the Middle Ages" (Sarton). English excerpts appeared in the 1800 edition of Tiberius Cavallo's Treatise on Magnetism; a projected 1892 full English version by Charles Sanders Peirce was never published.
