first complete edition in english. number 113 of 240 copies, printed at the Chiswick Press. Pierre de Maricourt's letter dating from 1269 was the first separate treatise on magnetism, "one of the greatest monuments of experimental research in the Middle Ages" (Sarton). English excerpts appeared in the 1800 edition of Tiberius Cavallo's Treatise on Magnetism; a projected 1892 full English version by Charles Sanders Peirce was never published. with a signed inscription from thompson to Henry M. Hobart dated February 1911, and a one-page als from him presenting this copy to Hobart. Thompson (1851-1916) was a British physicist and historian of science; Hobart (1868-1946) was an American electrical and railway engineer.
