SCOTT COUSINS (1957- )

Orfeo & Sizzy.
Oil on linen canvas, 2018. 1117 mm; 44 inches diameter.
Provenance: private collection, New York.
The artist re-invents an LGBTQ+ mythology, whose genesis lies in classical mythology. The myth of Orpheus, sent to Hades to bring back his lover, Sisyphus, who in Hades has been tasked with rolling a boulder up a hill, only to roll over the top and down. Orfeo must not look back at his lover as he leads his Sizzy up, from Hades and his eternal task. Orfeo only needs to know the way up and they're bound together by rings and ribbons. The passion and desire of love, sacred and profane love amidst life's struggles.

Scott Cousins lives and paints in his New York City art studio space. His art practice began in earliest youth and has continued throughout his 67 years. With a unique and extensive background, in more than one arts discipline, he brings a rare and very individual frame of reference to his painting. Completely dedicated to art and painting, his oeuvre delves into explorations with color, composition, concept and subject matter.

Born in CT, he came to NYC at 15 years old to study art with a portfolio of paintings and drawings in hand. Since, he studied at several different schools of art, here in the city. He's been the recipient a FORD Foundation Grant and also a Pollock~Krasner Foundation grant for painting.
