". . . As you must, by tomorrow, have sufficiently figured in the Clay-reception, I can see no reason why you should not come over. For Sunday, I promise you two good sermons & one indifferent dinner, which--taking the bible & the cheese together--as your countrymen trade in the West Indies--I think I offer you no bad bargain, to say nothing of atonement.
"If you can bring our friend, Chas. L. Livingston with you, tant mieux for me. Having that ci-devant Loco foco with us, there will be no danger of our breaking the Sabbath by talking politics. Besides, we may do some chess, if not three-handed whist . . . ."
