Scott (1786-1866) was a famed American military leader, served in the War of 1812, oversaw the removal of Indians on the Trail of Tears, fought in the Second Seminole War, commanded the Southern theatre during the Mexican War, was promoted to Lieutenant General in 1855--the first officer to attain that rank since George Washington--named General-in-Chief of the Union army at the start of the Civil War, and devised the "Anaconda Plan" to defeat Confederate forces.
