In Quilts, Huckaby applies a lovingly built-up impasto that uniquely describes each patch of the quilt. In an interview with Creative Loafing, he describes his quilts as "The idea is starting at a basic kind of love, like that of a mother for children or a grandmother for her children, with the quilts."

He has been the recipient of numerous prestigious awards including a Guggenheim fellowship, Joan Mitchell Foundation grant and a Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation grant. His works are in the collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, African American Museum of Dallas, Texas, Whitney Museum of American Art, Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University, Durham and the Minneapolis Institute of Art.
