Additional Details

Commonly referred to as Seutter's "Mississippi Bubble" map for its dramatic title cartouche embellished by satirical scenes relating to the collapse of John Law's Mississippi Company investment scheme in 1720. Allegorical promise of riches, meaningless stocks, and empty money pouches face the doomed investors with the realization of their financial ruin. The cartography is based on Nicolas de Fer's map of 1718 and centers on the Mississippi River, with a large inset of the Delta and Gulf Coast in the upper left. Earlier state with "Chalcog. Augustan" in the title. McCorkle 730.3.
