Additional Details

Seutter produced 2 maps of Japan around 1740. It is assumed that his Imperium Japonicum was issued prior to the present map because it made no notice of his imperial patent status (see previous lot). That map was based on the Reland model. The present map is based on the Kaempfer/Scheuchzer model and Seutter's royal patent is noted. Seutter gives full credit to Kaempfer for the map and in the cartouche includes an image of Kaempfer making his map of Japan. Walter 80; Campbell 53.
