Roesen (1816- after 1872) was born in Boppard, Germany and was a porcelain painter in Cologne before immigrating to New York in 1848 as a refugee fleeing the peasant revolutions in Europe. He spent time in New York and Philadelphia before moving to Williamsport, Pennsylvania. He is known for his meticulous and realistic still lifes, often utilizing the recurring motifs of flowers, wine glasses, decorative footed plates with strawberries and pilsner glasses. The compositions are reminiscent of 17th and 18th century Dutch still lifes and represent the abundance of nature and the richness of the New World. He left Williamsport in 1872 and thereafter disappeared from any public records.
