Additional Details

scarce first edition of a work by a Greek philosopher active circa 200 A.D. summarizing the arguments of Pyrrhonian skepticism against the reliability of human knowledge and applying them to a critique of other schools of philosophy. Neglected during the Middle Ages, its rediscovery via Estienne's translation in the 16th century strongly influenced contemporary and later European philosophical and religious thought. The original Greek text was first published in 1621. GLN-2215; Hoffmann III, 394; Sarton I, 299; Schreiber 149.
