Rising out of San Francisco Bay, Treasure Island and the Inca-inspired "Tower of the Sun" are flanked on each side by The Golden Gate and the San Francisco Bay bridges. The site of the 1939 Golden Gate International Exhibition, the man-made island was one of three government-funded building projects celebrated by the fair; the other two were the construction of both bridges. From the beginning, the island and exhibition halls were slated to become an airport after the fair ended and were leased by the government at the beginning of World War II. Louis Shawl was the first artist to serve on the board of directors of San Francisco's Advertising Club, and later became President of the San Francisco Art Directors Club.
