SHEPARD, ERNEST HOWARD (1879-1976) "Sketch for In the Fashion." Pencil on paper; 7 1/2 x 8 1/4 inches. Preliminary drawing for an illustration for a poem in the first Winnie-the-Pooh book, When We Were Very Young by A. A. Milne, London: Methuen & Co. Ltd., 1924. Signed "E. H. Shepard" lower left and titled lower right. Christopher Robin and Winnie-the-Pooh made their debut in the famous collection of children's verse, When We Were Very Young. Illustrator E. H. Shepard did as much as author A. A. Milne in creating the famous inhabitants of the Hundred Acre Wood. Milne could not have been happier with his collaborator's pictures. He wrote in the copy of Winnie-the-Pooh (1926) he gave Shepard: "When I am gone, Let Shepard decorate my tomb, And put (if there is room), Two pictures on the stone: Piglet, from page a hundred and eleven, And Pooh and Piglet walking (157) ... And Peter, thinking they are my own, Will welcome me to heaven." Nd, c. 1924
