Sherman began her untitled film still series in 1977, when she moved to New York City with Robert Longo. Her impersonations, which draw from old B movies and film noir, were investigations of female character types. As Arthur Danto has remarked, the film stills are not isolated frames from movies but rather reenactments that are used to advertise a film. As advertisements they are meant to stimulate enough interest to sell tickets. He attributes the success of Sherman's works to their being "simultaneously and inseparably photographs and performances."
