Among the contributions to Bok's Beecher Memorial: Contemporaneous Tributes to the Memory of Henry Ward Beecher, 1887, was one by Sherman: "The friendship existing between Henry Ward Beecher and myself was most warm. . . . His mind and imagination could not be tied down to the narrow dogmas which shackled smaller men . . . ."
