Additional Details

Shinique Smith is most well known for her wrapped sculptures, or "bundles," created by binding together piles of found clothing and textiles with rope and ribbon, and suspending them in mid-air. This drawing is likely linked to a series of such sculptures, Bale Variants (c. 2005-2019), which imitates the compressed bales of second-hand clothes sent to developing countries, commenting on over-consumerism and globalization. This study manages to capture the monumentality and gravity of these works, while maintaining a sense of delicacy and weightlessness.
