The Théâtre des Champs-Élysées opened in 1913. The structure was immediately popular with the artistic community as it eschewed all of the traditional Art Nouveau flourishes and ornamentation that were popular at the time. An early Art Deco wonder, it became one of the most popular venues in the city, and was chosen to host many avant-garde events such as Les Ballets Russes, Les Ballets Suedois and the Revue Negre. It also served as a theatre for the rest of Paris, presenting shows that were not shocking or cutting edge, but rather traditional such as this one-night performance of Russian dancing.
