Additional Details

Muhammad Ali, aka Cassius Clay, victorious in 31 fights, met his first defeat at the hands of Joe Frazier on March 8, 1971. Frazier landed a blow--shown in this picture--which broke Ali's jaw. Later on, in the 15th round, Ali was knocked down for a 4-count. He lost the heavyweight championship by a unanimous decision. As for Sinatra, his photographs were featured in LIFE magazine's March 19, 1971 issue (including the cover photograph), and accompanied an essay by Norman Mailer about the fight.
