Both publications date this image to 1948. Carl Chiarenza's text in Pleasure and Terrors relates the picture to Chicago images made the same year, which were also graphically harsh and emotive. "Siskind," the essay states, "is said to have described one of the Chicago pictures as 'the underground hell of never-gratified desire.'" Related in many ways to the gesture painters of the same period (Pollock, de Kooning, Tworkov, and Klein), Siskind's photographs reveal extreme sensitivity and repressed expression.
