SMITH, J. CALVIN. Special-Karte der Vereinigten Staaten von Nord-America. Atlas containing a general map of North America, 15 mapsheets forming a large image of the eastern portion of the United States, plus a small introductory map picturing the sectioned map if assembed; all hand-colored except for the small introductory map. Sheets measure 410x535 mm (16 1/4x21 inches); bound in the original calf-backed boards, boards possibly covered in paper when issued, some wear at extremities; some foxing, otherwise internally quite bright and clean. Cassel: Th. Fischer, 1860s

Additional Details

Highly unusual atlas. Each portion of the 15-section map has gradients and neat lines. Map extends westward to eastern Texas and Indian Territory. Final map of the continental United States has Nebraska as a territory (entered Union in 1867), suggesting the atlas was printed before that date.
Smith's maps are encountered as American productions. The fact that the atlas was printed in Germany might suggest that it was created to be carried by German immigrants moving to the U.S.
