Founded by the artist William Copley (1919-1996), S.M.S. was a subscription-based series that intended to bypass the contemporary art market to make art accessible to anyone. Each portfolio contained approximately a dozen works, and were mailed bi-monthly to subscribers. The 6 issues of S.M.S. allowed people to collect art by artists from Man Ray to Roy Lichtenstein for a the affordable rate of $125 per subscription.
