SOLOMON KONINCK
A Man with a Penknife.

Etching, circa 1635-40. 157x125 mm; 6 1/4x5 inches. Trimmed on the plate mark. A superb, richly-inked, early impression of this extremely scarce Dutch etching.

Koninck (1609-1656) moved in Rembrandt's circle and the arts academy of Rembrandt's uncle Hendrick van Uylenburgh, making many copies of Rembrandt's compositions. Konick's celbrated painting, The Philosopher with an Open Book, now at the Louvre, Paris, was long attributed to Rembrandt. Hollstein 6.
