First volume with 107 plates, portrait of Sommerard, and a chromolithographed extra title and approximately 80 plates in each of the other volumes. Over 500 plates in all, including mounted India proofs, lithographs, chromolithographs, most hand-colored and highlighted with arabic,many exquisitely painted, others more crudely rendered. Large folio, 1/2 morocco lettered in gilt along spines, variously rubbed; plates occasionally bound out of order, plate numbers sometimes corrected by hand; scattered foxing, mostly to black-and-white plates, few margins trimmed or plate labels bound into gutter. Despite lacking text volumes the set contains a large quantity of the most impressive plates including scenes from books of hours, jewelry, costume, and weaponry, often executed with painstaking detail, and still an "ouvrage splendide et d'un grand intérêt"--Brunet II, 920.
