Additional Details

First edition in French of the Tractatus theologico-politicus, translated by the Huguenot refugee Gabriel de Saint-Glain with previously unpublished notes by Spinoza. "A small and compact volume . . . easy to hide and easy to read, it carried the thoughts of Spinoza to the libertins and philosophes of the coming century" (Bamberger). Like the Latin original, the French version appeared under misleading variant titles to evade censorship. Van der Linde 12; Bamberg, The Early Editions of Spinoza's Tractatus Theologico-Politicus, page 27 and footnote 58 (this edition); Printing and the Mind of Man 153 (1670 original edition in Latin).
