Stanley Mouse was a cornerstone of the explosion of psychedelic art emerging from San Francisco in the 1960s. He worked with the Family Dog production company and created an extraordinary series of posters that "firmly established the 'psychedelic' style as an expression of the times" (Art of Rock p. 74). Ignoring the previously understood tenets of poster design that called for legibility and efficient typography, the Psychedelists broke all the rules and created a new visual lexicon that will forever be associated with that era. This image was based on an illustration by Edmund Joseph Sullivan for a 1913 edition The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. In the hands of Stanley Mouse, the skeleton, endearingly referred to as "Bones and Roses," has become one of the most widely recognized images in the history of Rock and Roll. The Grateful Dead went on to use this image on the cover of one of their albums. This is the second printing. American Style 11.
