STANLEY W. HAYTER
Unstable Woman.

Color engraving, soft-ground etching, scorper and screenprint on Japan paper, 1946-47. 377x500 mm; 15x19 3/4 inches, full margins. Fifth state (of 5). Signed, titled, dated and numbered 39/50 in pencil, lower margin. A brilliant, richly-inked impression with vibrant colors.

Hayter constantly pushed and developed new technical advances, as Désirée Moorhead writes, "He was always impatient to push on to the unknown--what was done was done," (Black/Moorhead, p. 23). His advances in color printmaking, achieved through multiple trials during the late 1940s and with the use of screenprinting or stenciling colors onto the metal itaglio plates, reached its zenith in Unstable Woman, a stunning combination of Hayter's classic linear imagery with 3 distinct, though sometimes overlapping and harmonious screenprinted colors. Black/Moorhead 177.
