STANLEY W. HAYTER
Untitled.

Wood engraving, 1927. 37x96 mm; 1 1/2x3 3/4 inches, full margins. Only one recorded trial proof. Signed in pencil, lower right. A very good impression of this extremely scarce, early wood engraving.

According to Black/Moorhead, this print is known in only a single impression, formerly in the artist's collection.

Hayter (1901-1988) began his illustrious career as a printmaker in 1926 in Paris, after studying both art and chemistry in London the previous decade. His earliest printed works, woodcuts and engravings, evince the influence of some of the main avant-garde movements of the era, from the Fauves to German Expressionism, as well as the hand of his mentor, the Polish-born, German trained printmaker Joseph Hecht, with whom Hayter would found the immensely influential and important printmaking studio Atelier 17. Black/Moorhead 11.
