scarce first limited edition of 490 copies. inscribed by stegner and with two typed letters signed, all to painter Elizabeth Worthington. They were written when he was 29 years old, teaching at The University of Wisonsin, married, and with a young son. Clearly love letters, they communicate longing and intimacy and mention his daily struggles of writing and teaching. He ends the second letter with "They do say an artist has a great advantage because he can paint or write his life without having to live it. I don't know. Maybe art is a kind of aesthetic straightarm to difficulties. Let's try it anyway." Each 1 page, folded 8vo, Signed "W" in Stegner's hand. 15 October and 17 November, both folded in envelope postmarked 17 November 1938 from Madison, Wisconsin.
