"LETTERS FROM SCHOOL CHILDREN MAKE ME DESPAIR OF OUR EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM" STEINBECK, JOHN. Typed Letter Signed, "J.S.," to "dear N.P.," sending letters [not present], complaining that letters from school children disappoint him, giving travel plans, remarking that books sent to Russia are being returned but that Russian writers are sending him their books, and sharing excitement that his new English bull terrier has been selected for special training. 1 page, 4to, personal stationery; horizontal folds. New York, 19 November 1964

Additional Details

". . . The letters from school children make me despair of our educational system. . . . They get pretty snotty . . . . I think what makes me the maddest is that they think they have a right to make these demands, although they, at least some of them, try spreading on the treacle flattery.
". . . [W]e will be here until December 21st. Then we go to Ireland and England and France and will not return until about the first of February. So you can spread the word that I am out of the country and maybe we can keep that up indefinitely. . . .
"Books sent to Russia by State are still coming back. . . . But the Russian matter has taken another turn. In appreciation for my book, Russian writers are now sending me their books, (in Russian). It is very joyful. . . .
"I just got most exciting news. My new dog has been chosen and is being trained. He is eighteen months old, a large pure white English bull terrier, chosen not only for looks and beauty but for character and disposition, a very strong dog and not quarrelsome. . . . ."
