first edition. presentation copy, inscribed to Steinbeck's friend John Kremer in blue ink on the half-title. Reads in full: "for John Kremer / with the hope that he / may find some musical / overtones in this / John Steinbeck." About three years after publication of the book, Lieutenant Commander John Kremer was killed in a Kamikaze attack during the Battle of Leyte Gulf, the largest naval battle of WWII and the first in which Japanese aircraft carried out organized Kamikaze attacks. On January 14, 1945, shortly after learning of his friend's death, Steinbeck wrote a letter of condolence to Kremer's widow from Pacific Grove, California (Carroll, War Letters, 2008, p. 264).
