STEPHEN EDLICH
Three Layer Bronze Relief.

Muntz metal relief in the artist's original wood frame, 1969. 730x710x65 mm; 28 3/4x28x2 1/2 inches (overall). Signed, titled, dated, numbered 3/7 and inscribed "Bs 2040" in felt-tip pen and ink verso.

Muntz metal is a brass alloy composed of approximately 60% copper, 40% zinc and a trace of iron. It is named after George Fredrick Muntz, a metal-roller of Birmingham, England, who commercialised the alloy following his patent of 1832. The most common application of Muntz metal during much of the 19th century was as a sheathing to protect ship hulls as well as the piles of piers.
