STEPHEN PARRISH
Greenwich Hospital.

Etching printed in dark brownish black on heavy wove paper, 1884-85. 305x407 mm; 12x16 1/8 inches, full margins. Signed in pencil, lower right. A very good impression of this large etching.

Born in Philadelphia, Parrish (1846-1938) learned etching in the late 1870s from Peter Moran. He had traveled to Paris and London, ostensibly to visit the Paris Exposition Universelle, in 1867, and later tapped scenes from that trip in his prints. Yet his etched work predominantly consists of views of harbors and coastal scenes of the northeastern United States.

While there is no clear indication that Parrish knew Whistler's etchings, the likelihood is strong that he did given his interest in etching and the 1881 exhibition in Philadelphia of Whistler's Venice etchings. Parrish's views of the Thames reflect the influence of Whistler's (and Haden's) early Thames etchings. Schneider 108.
